HuliHuliWood is based in Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, about 26 miles from Hilo, Hawaii.
About Me:
I'm Rick Frazier, an established wood turner on Hawaii Island. I turned my first bowls around 1966 in High School in a small town in western Washington state. I turned bowls and other items off and on for the intervening years before I moved to Hawaii in 1999. Once living in Hawaii, I connected with a local woodturning group (BigIslandWoodturners.org) in 2001 and haven't looked back since. Most recently, I retired from a High-Tech career in early 2017 and am now pursuing my art full time. I also work in several other media, such as stone, glass, clay, metal and textiles, but am focusing primarily on wood at this time.
My workshop is in Volcano, Hawaii, and my primary sales outlets are face to face at the Hilo Farmer's Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and the Kona Art Stroll (2nd or 3rd Sunday of each month, beginning in Julty 2018.)
Why HuliHuliWood?
HuliHuli in Hawaiian means "round-round" or "turn-turn" and that's what happens to wood when it is turned on a wood lathe. Though I do make a number items that aren't produced using a wood lathe, the majority of items involve the lathe, so the name fits. Folks here in the islands are already familiar with Huli Huli Chicken to indicate rotisserie roasted chicken.
This page shows the wood items I have available for shipment.
Availability:
Please note that due to the nature of live sales at my local venues, and time it takes to update this site, some items on this site may no longer be available. Contact me via email (rickf@rickfrazier.com) or voice or text at 808-640-3549 if you have interest in items shown here.
Payment:
I use Square for credit card transactions, and can either invoice you or take information over the phone or text for any item(s) still available. Shipping charges will apply.
Shipping:
In most cases, shipping cost for an item will be indicated. I ship via USPS Priority Mail to the USA, and use USPS International for other locations. Please be advised that the quoted shipping costs are only for the USA. I will have to investigate and provide costs to International Locations. Normal transit times for the USA are 3 to 5 days from shipment from Hawaii. (West coast is usually faster than East coast). The shipping cost for larger items is usually based more on volume of the package than the actual weight.
Inventory and special orders:
This site may not display all of my current inventory, so if you don't see what you are looking for, either contact me or come back and check again later. I do respond to requests for specific items, but be aware it can take some time to create and ship some items due to the creation, drying and finishing processes.
Inventory and website updates:
As mentioned above, due to the combination local and internet sales, my inventory changes often, and items displayed on this site may not be available. Please understand that this is a one-man operation, so web site updates may lag a bit behind actual sales if I get behind.
Wood Types: At the current time, I only work with woods that grow on the Island of Hawaii. We have a huge variety of woods available here, though some are in very short supply. For items that are made from woods that are not common, special note will be made in the comments.
Finishes:
Typically, I use a food safe lacquer. It is not only food safe, but very durable and never needs to be waxed to stay looking good. It will hold up well to food service, but should not be put in a dishwasher or microwave oven.
Generally, each item will show three or four views. Bottom, a side view or two, and top view. Click on any image to open a full size image in a new window. If you need additional information on any items, please contact me.
